MalawiIn December 2015, WFP Malawi started remote phone-based data collection and food security monitoring throughout the country through the mobile Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping (mVAM) approach. Survey respondents were initially contacted via text messages (SMS) and asked to respond to a short series of questions on coping strategies used, manual labour rates, and the food security situation in their communities. In March 2017, WFP switched from SMS to live calls, allowing for the collection of data on food consumption. Live calls are also used to contact traders for updates on food prices and availability, and to reach health centers for information on new admissions to malnutrition treatment programs.
